Beyoncé & Ed Sheeran’s Stage Outfits Ignite Gender Standards Debate

Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran took to the Global Citizen Festival last Sunday to perform their #1 duet, Perfect, but fans were paying attention to more than just the music.

After images from the show circulated around Twitter, a heated debate sparked over what the two superstars were wearing on stage. Beyoncé dons an intricately beautiful (and most surely expensive) pink gown while Sheeran sports a simple t-shirt (with a long-sleeve shirt underneath) and jeans.

The debate is one that has hovered over the pop music world for years. While female pop stars are expected to have elaborate looks and/or several costume changes during their shows, men are free to perform in the most basic of outfits, sometimes just sweatpants and a tank top—or even shirtless.

It begs the question: is there a double standard for our entertainers?

Twitter obsessed over the question.

Nobody expects any woman to be all dolled up. It is the competitive spirit among men to be more monied than their contemporaries that makes women want to be more ‘flamboyant’ than their contemporaries. Funny tho, its the opposite sex who enjoys the ‘fruits’ of this competition.
Beyonce, the icon that she is, on deciding to wear jeans and flip-flops will create that laid back trend that no one can raise eyebrows at. But NO ooo. She must wear makeup to bed sef

What our ancestors thought we will be doing in 2018: Conquering Mars, Having clean energy, Respecting LGBT rights, building high speed underwater ships etc.

What we are actually doing in 2018: Being angry because a grown up man decided to wear his normal concert/tour routine clothes.
Fuck 2018 man, folks be getting angry stupidly. Y’all expect Ed to drop his selling point bout him I.e his simplicity! Una go feed am? Pay him bills? Like seriously Amy Winehouse donned khaki and tank top and nobody gave a fuck. Twitter people won’t look for better things to do.

LOL the last post got me howling ? Someone has fixed it by wearing Ed a gorgeous gown.

Ladies are the ones killing themselves, and it’s all about competition with other artists. They want to be the center of attention. You won’t bother if you don’t care… Anyone that sincerely likes your art will take all your shits into consideration.

Naomi Campbell wore like four different outfits and wigs at that event… It’s like a competition, everyone is just busy on themselves trying to give people what to talk about.
