Having Lots Of Sex Can Bring You Closer To God, Study Finds

Can having sex bring you closer to God? According to a new study, the answer is yes. Hallelujah, yes!

Researchers from Duke University in North Carolina just carried an experiment where they boosted levels of oxytocin in middle-aged men. Oxytocin is a naturally-occurring hormone released in the brain during sex and believed to play a part in promoting empathy, trust, social bonding, and altruism.

Researchers found that men, including atheists, who received the increased levels of the hormone reported higher levels of spirituality compared to those who did not receive the boost.

Participants who received the boost also responded more positively to statements like “all life is interconnected” and “there is a higher plane of consciousness or spirituality that binds all people,” and they reported more positive emotions, including awe, gratitude, hope, inspiration, interest,  love, and serenity.

“Spirituality and meditation have each been linked to health and well-being in previous research,” Patty Van Cappallen, a social psychologist and the lead author of the study, told the university’s newspaper Duke Today. “We were interested in understanding biological factors that may enhance those spiritual experiences. Oxytocin appears to be part of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs.”

Actually, many of us atheists really do feel the awe, wonder that religious people feel about life. We appreciate and marvel at the sheer complexity and interconnectedness of things around us. We just do not seek religious and superstitious explanations for them because we don’t see enough evidence for such. We believe that science has the capacity to break it down for us truthfully, even making it all more wonderful to us. That we don’t believe in minds doesn’t mean we don’t share such feelings about the magnificence of the brain.

Now I understand what that COZA pastor was doing with Ese Walters, he was getting closer to God.

Does this now mean churches should have fuck sessions like they have prayer sessions?

I wonder if this boost in spirituality works for the unmarried as well as the married. We can’t be boosting spirituality by committing sin, can we?

This gives new meaning to saying “I think I have been neglecting my spirituality”

Also the concept of quiet time needs to be reconsidered because the way I boost my spirituality and keeping quiet don’t go hand in hand. It is just like Paul said in Romans 8:26 “the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans”

Doesn’t this now mean grindr should be considered holy or is the boost only for straight sex, in which case it will be Holy Tinder?

Now to go get me some spiritual boost…

Actually this is not such a new finding. The idea of experiencing God through sexuality has been treated extensively by muslim scholars in the Middle Ages. Good to see it is now validated also by science.
