Photo: A Disney Story Without A Princess?

The picture below has been floating around on Instagram.

Reportedly, last year, Disney announced that it would be producing its first animated feature film with two openly gay lead characters who will fall in love and, by the end of the film, even find happiness in a fairytale, same-sex wedding. The film, titled Princes, will be released to theaters in the fall of this year.

The entertainment giant has had a long history of supporting LGBT initiatives. In the late 90′s the company was among the first to extend healthcare benefits to partners of homosexual employees and Gay pride events have been hosted at Disney World since 1991. Many have also speculated that other Disney movies have been Pro-Gay, albeit in a more subtle way. Disney’s blockbuster hit, Frozen, was riddled with pro-gay subtext. Elsa hiding her ice-powers can easily be interpreted as a metaphor for the closet and the Oscar-winning “Let it Go” sounds exactly like a coming-out anthem. However, Princes will certainly mark the first time that the company will produce an animated children’s film starring openly gay main characters.

Princes is an adaptation of the children’s book, “The Princes and the Treasure”, by Jeffrey A Miles. In the book, two handsome princes, Earnest and Gallant, set off to rescue a princess, but fall in love with each other instead. The fairytale story ends with the two princes getting married and living happily ever after. The book has recently been released internationally after initially being available in the United States in February of 2014.9bb748fb8576890b0496d5b8e035cf74a484854b

“I suddenly wondered, why aren’t there any gay princes or lesbian princesses?” Miles told LGBT website Advocate. “Why can’t the handsome prince marry another handsome prince? Why can’t a damsel in distress be rescued by a beautiful princess?

“Kids see that the story is about two people who fall in love and get married. All of the kids who have read the story don’t find it unusual that the two characters who get married happen to be two men. Kids seem to see that love can happen between two people regardless of the couple’s gender.”

I do not know the veracity of these reports, seeing as amplifyingglass.com, the site that published them has a disclaimer that it publishes news from a satirical angle.

But one can’t help but wonder if Disney could one day make this happen.

I just couldn’t with his comment. When the topic is about the Disney making of, say, Cinderella, we go ‘awww.’ Now its a gay Disney movie and he feels the need to talk of censors board and sensuality. As though the word ‘gay’ in a movie project instantly translates to something unpalatable for viewership.

Gad, Disney animations contain zero sensual or even sexual content. Dances, hugs, kisses, singing-Yes but X-rated or X-related content can never be found in a Disney animation. Please oh! And do let your kids watch the movie. It’ll make for a change from the normal hetero stuff they’ve been seeing.

Call me old school but I see no reason for this animation…. I don’t think it’s fair on the kids (I beleive mostly kids watch animation) to fuck with thier mind. Let them have the chance to decide what they want for themselves.

This will fuck with some kids mind in the sense that.. Kids get convinced easily and are very curios. Kids that weren’t gay before this could decide to try it out and end up gay where as if they didn’t watch this.. The possibility of them becoming gay will be lesser

Note* not saying being gay is bad (definitely can’t say that before I am turn to shreds on here) all am saying kids minds should not be fucked with by exposing them to this. It’s almost depriving some (not all) of the kids the opportunity to decide on thier preferred sexual orientation.
Most of them will play daddy and daddy.. After watching this sequel as suppose to daddy and mummy. Which end up becoming an habit, character and part of them from just innocent prank plays.
And I know most will say.. They should be educated abt LGBT. Which brings me to this question.. At what age is it appropriate to educate an individual on this? Knowing fully well it not been totally accepted by majority of the world population.
    This is my opinion.

@teflon, I would be telling a big lie if I say I don’t understand the direction of ur arguement or possible reservations that a lot of ppl would ve regarding this development. But.we need to keep in mind that homophobia thrives, thanks to ignorance, selfhate and denial. This my friend is an avenue to make enlighten the younger generation about gay love. The world has evolved and will continue to do so. This is production is one of the million chain of events that is reshaping the world and its views about life (if it happens eventually)
This is a huge change and the backlash would be strong. Truth is no one ever said change would come easily. Some of us will ve gay kids or nephew/niece, would u want them to grow in the kind of environment as u did? If not, this production is a step towards that direction, I’m not sure how I feel about it, I don’t love the idea, neither do I hate. I’d just like to think of it as a step towards enlightening future homophobes that its fine to be different. Help parents cope with their children are gay and the world is slowly understanding it. We are all in this together. We spent years learning and understanding how to be straight. Maybe its time we start telling our story, maybe its time we are heard. U and I are too cowardly to do it, the least we could do is applaud brave folks who are willing to fight for the cause.

As usual, I only read about two lines of your comment. Kids are exposed to heterosexual content all the time, I see no one waving the “let them decide” card. Its really stupid to think that somehow gay content will mess with their mind. Are you in their mind? Don’t you think you could’ve benefited from seeing gay themed animations when you were younger, it would’ve helped with the self loathing you’re currently exhibiting.
I just can’t help it when gay people are being so senseless and irrational. Not everything gay is sexual. Every part of your comment reeks of internalized homophobia and the general belief that being gay is a choice and wrong. No need to fret over what we are exposing the kids to. Parents who don’t support LGBT will not carry their kids to go see a cartoon perpetuating what they dislike. So be rest assured that if in the end a kid ends up being gay from one cartoon (I couldn’t type this with a straight face) then the parents wouldn’t mind.

And just like many other people have said.. From left left to right growing up we have been assaulted with heterosexual images. Cartoons, films, books, adverts have all involved a man and woman. Why hasn’t that made me straight. All it did was make me think something was wrong with me and I was abnormal.

Which child really cares about cartoon characters kissing seff. Not like they are going to have sex and scar the kids for life. I could go on and on but lemme shut up now.

What I like about this forum, it exposes bigotry. Subtle bigotry.

When I tried to clamp down on chizzie’s vitriol, a number of KDians flew into a rage. They said I didn’t have the right to censor anyone’s comments. They raged and raged and raged. Not like I cared. I’ll always do what I believe is right.

So I sat back and watched some of these same freedom of speech fighters give unpopular opinions. Opinions that placed them in the crosshairs of others’ insults.

And then they cried out: ‘Abba Father why hast thou forsaken us…’
Oh sorry, I meant to say, they cried out about the injustice of KDians slinging insults, conveniently forgetting how they adored chizzie and loved chizzie and said chizzie’s ‘controversial’ comments are what they enjoy in the comments section.

So I want to then ask: how come the insults are not so adorable and enjoyable when you’re the target? Or would you rather chizzie be the one slinging them at you?
