The Oscar Noms and Snubs for LGBT Films and Artists

The Oscar Noms and Snubs for LGBT Films and Artists

Oscar 1Carol

SNUBBED: Carol, the dark horse contender, failed to snag a Best Picture nomination, despite its timely theme and powerful lead performances. It is a rare film that tells the story of two women falling in love, and it has won devoted appreciation among queer women. Now, women are feeling particularly ignored by the Academy, with the field of Best Director nominees once again being filled only by men.

oscar 2Cate Blanchett

NOMINATED: Mighty Cate earned her seventh Oscar nomination (she’s won twice) as the complex, conflicted socialite who falls in love with a young woman.

oscar 3Rooney Mara

NOMINATED: As the object of Carol’s affection, Mara’s fine performance earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination.

oscar 4Todd Haynes

SNUBBED: The out gay director was unfairly snubbed for a Best Director nomination for his finely crafted tale of forbidden lesbian love. His film did pull in a total of six nominations, including for costume, score, and cinematography.

oscar 5Phyllis Nagy

NOMINATED: Out writer Phyllis Nagy took acclaimed out author Patricia Highsmith’s novel, The Price of Salt, and beautifully adapted it for the screen, bringing alive its famously romantic passages in what is now Carol.

oscar 6The Danish Girl

SNUBBED: The dark horse contender failed to snag a Best Picture nomination, despite its timely theme and powerful lead performances.

oscar 7Eddie Redmayne

NOMINATED: The brilliant Brit followed last year’s Best Actor win as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything with another stunning turn as trans artist Lili Elbe.

oscar 8Alicia Vikander

NOMINATED: As the artist wife of a transitioning husband, Vikander earned a Best Supporting Actress nod for her beautifully sensitive performance in The Danish Girl.

oscar 9Tom Hooper

SNUBBED: The Oscar-winning director (The King’s Speech) was denied a second nomination for the dreamy and gorgeous transgender tale, The Danish Girl.

oscar 10Lady Gaga

NOMINATED: Everyone’s favorite bisexual pop diva and LGBT activist earned a nomination for her haunting song, Til It Happens To You, from the campus rape documentary.

oscar 11Sam Smith

NOMINATED: The singer-songwriter followed up his Golden Globe win for Writing’s On The Wall with an Oscar nomination – making him the first out gay singer to perform a James Bond theme (unless you count bi-gal Madonna’s Die Another Day).

oscar 12Miley Cyrus

SNUBBED: The pansexual pixie missed out on an Oscar nod for her ballad, Hands of Love, from the otherwise overlooked lesbian drama, Freeheld.

oscar 13Andrew Haigh

SNUBBED: The gay writer-director (Weekend, Looking) couldn’t pull off an upset nomination for this subtle and moody film, 45 Years.

oscar 14Ian McKellen

SNUBBED: The elder statesman of gay actors was overlooked for a nomination in Mr. Holmes as the aging sleuth, Sherlock Holmes.

oscar 15Lily Tomlin

SNUBBED: The lesbian legend was a dark horse candidate who didn’t make the Oscar cut as a lesbian grandmother on a day-long quest with her granddaughter in Grandma.

oscar 16Emma Donoghue

NOMINATED: Out writer Emma Donoghue’s adapted screenplay for Room brought the frightening original book to the screen. It tells the story of a woman held captive for years and years in a single room with her 5-year-old son, who she still must try to give a happy life.

oscar 17Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez

SNUBBED: The transgender actresses were long-shots who missed out on a nomination for the low-budget indie, Tangerine.

oscar 18People of Color

SNUBBED: Every person nominated for acting — in best actor, best supporting actor, best actress and best supporting actress — is white. For Academy watchers, unfortunately this won’t come as a big surprise, except that the problem persists. Reporters are also noting that Straight Outta Compton, which some expected would get a Best Picture nomination, was left out. In addition to a stellar, predominantly African-American cast, including the much lauded performance of Jason Mitchell as rapper Eazy-E, the film included a major plot line about HIV stigma.

Maybe some of the snubbed films weren’t all that good.

What other snubbed film in this list apart from Carol and The Danish Girl?

Lol, sheathe your claws honey.. I’m just saying; maybe the snubbing had nothing to do with the LGBT theme of the movies..

I wasn’t pointing out the snubs becos of the LGBT theme. I was pointing out the snubs becos they were good films with superb direction and performances that people were surprised didn’t get nominated.

Which people were surprised? Not every film can get an Academy Award nomination.

I’m the worst person to make a comment about movies but should the movies you claimed that were snubbed make it as a token gesture? What if all made it & people say it’s the gay propaganda (like the PhD student), won’t we be up in arms against them?

I haven’t seen any of them. I guess they did not merit nomination. The question is, are the other nominated films and directors not good enough? Or you want to pull an Olamide on them?

I watched Straight Outta Compton on the plane a few days ago. It was nice but I see why it didn’t get nominated. Only the guy that played Eazy E was outstanding in my opinion.

OAN I had no idea the circumstances of Eazy E’s death. Apparently he announced he had full blown AIDS and was dead the next week. Never even fell sick before according to those close to him in the months leading up to his death. Conspiracy theorists say Suge Knight had him injected with AIDS infected blood when he went for a hospital visit. Crazy stuff.
