Caitlyn Jenner apologises for ‘man in a dress’ comments

Caitlyn Jenner has apologised for comments which led to accusations of transphobia.

The reality star and former Olympian opened up to TIME Magazine, after making the shortlist for Person of the Year. She said: “If you’re out there and, to be honest with you, if you look like a man in a dress, it makes people uncomfortable.”

Responding to accusations of transphobia following the interview, she has now written for the Huffington Post to clarify her words.

She wrote: “What I was trying to say is that our world really is still a binary one, and that people who look ‘visibly transgender’ sometimes can struggle for acceptance and may be treated poorly by others.

“And while this may be true, it’s also something that needs to change. Some people look gender non-conforming because they want to look that way – they don’t want to conform to society’s expectations. Those people have every right to look and present exactly as they choose.”

She goes on to reflect on her “journey”, saying: “This is because I’m still finding out about the issues… Sometimes this is because something that is true for me isn’t true for other people in our community… and sometimes I’ve said things that just come out the wrong way.”

“But I am only one person. There are a lot of ways of being trans,” she continues. “And I want to help create a world in which people are able to express their gender in any way that is true and authentic for them. And most importantly — a world in which how a trans person is treated isn’t dependent on how they look.”

Jenner’s original comments have upset some members of the trans community, who don’t have access to her vast wealth to achieve her level of glam.

    Caitlyn babygurl, u rock!

I just love you more. Nobody is perfect. Everyone goes thru that period of trying to find who u really are and whats real and authentic to u.
Sadly this becomes a burden to many of us in this part of the world, cos the more you know about yourself the more you are exposed to just how much society hates you

I read the letter she posted, she said “this will probably not be the last thing I will say wrong, but I will continue to learn” or something like that!

I will always love caitlyn and I am very proud of the work that she does because at the end of the day nobody knows it all and nobody has all the answers!

She apologised! Shebi Mrs Mugabe said that if you get raped as a woman blame yourself for showing off your legs! Inspite of all the backlash that followed she troway face!

    Caitlyn! Good job

Maybe it’s just me,maybe I’m not “sensitive” or maybe my internalized homophobia is still raging strong, but I still don’t see any insult in what she said; it was just a statement of FACT,no matter how politically correct u want to paint d issue. What, was it the choice of words? It’s not a question of the “right” or “wrong” or “moral” thing to say; a trans woman who looks like a supermodel won’t be treated as unfairly as a transwoman who looks like a man. It’s not right,it’s not fair, not every trans person can pay for the surgeries and glam-aquad to make them look like Adriana Lima, but it’s just the sad reality; society won’t treat u d same way if u look a certain way.society is not fair, but it is what it is.

i suppose you wouldn’t see a problem if a famous gay “straight acting” celebrity said similar things about effeminate gays too…

Doesn’t she have a PR person? Someone to vet her statements before she makes them? If she keeps shocking the LGBT with these are insensitive comments, it damages her credibility as a spokesperson. And her apologies will cease to make a difference

Oh, even Caitlyn knows she was wrong. A statement she said that was so off-putting I had to vent my spleen only to be attacked unjustly by some self-professed ‘gods’ of the group. Issorait.
Anyway, in all, I’m glad she’s acknowledged her wrong and now I can take a few steps back and breathe in satisfaction.

She says a lot of stupid stuff, and apologises for them. That is sick and twisted.

I don’t accept the apology, she has to do something “tangible” for me to look at her in a good light.

I understand your plight, hunnay. It’s a positive step anyway, we can only hope she doesn’t go off-track as usual because my forgiving self is getting impatient also.

Ronnie, what exactly do you do for the trans community? I’d like to know about the castles you’ve built that gives you the impetus to spit on Caitlyn Jenner’s efforts. Because if you’ve got nothing, you really should shut up about her.

Maybe u should also learn to educate yourself on ‘business minding’. What right do you have to tell him to shut up when the hole on your face can’t also get a simple memo? He has every right to feel the way he’s feeling because Caitlyn has made some messy statements regardless of what she has done. Her statements could be hurtful and you know that, so why u attacking Ronnie. By the way, so many other people spoke against her here but I can’t find you attacking them. Please spare us your bile biko.

People on this blog, or maybe it’s just gay people (not generalizing) are really dumb.

I am here in a third world country not earning a salary, reading for my jamb and literally dying of mental illness.

I am 17, under my parents-still trying to climb up the ladder from which they fell- but this “person” thinks I have what it takes to build a castle.

Ronnie, in your haste to get catty, you totally missed the metaphor in Mandy’s comment. Of course we know you’re young and living with your parents and as such cannot cater to yourself. The ‘castle’ comment is not literal and doesn’t apply to how financially independent you are.
But somehow you’re managing to condescend to someone who was pointing out that unless you’ve impacted the trans community in anyway positive, you really have no high horse from which to malign Caitlyn Jenner.
I don’t understand you really. I don’t understand how you’re quick to spit out vituperation against people when you’re basically just a 17 year old ‘he/she’ under ‘his/her’ parents, reading for your jamb and earning no salary. How do you manage your condescension on the ‘really dumb’ people of this blog and on Caitlyn Jenner with credentials such as yours? How really?

Leave am, Pinky. Pikin hasn’t even passed jamb. How’s he to understand the subtleties of figures of speech? He’s quick to call people ‘dumb’ when he should be paying more attention to his textbooks.

I think there should be more love and acceptance in this blog. This guy is apparently little (not even up to the official adult status) and as such should sometimes reason like a teenager. Teenage exuberance, somebody? It’s not against nature. But when the supposed ‘adults’ and mature minds of the blog consistently push him away with padded statements and shady words, what do u expect? If we could at least practice a bit of the love and acceptance we clamour for here, Nigeria would be a better place.
