“Homosexuality is a crime in Nigeria and should remain so.” Donald Duke recants his comments that implied support for the LGBT

“‘I won’t criminalise them’ would have been a concrete statement if the law didn’t exist and there was a call in some quarters to have such a law.

“But the law does exist. So anybody saying anything short of ‘I will decriminalise…’ is just naïve at best or queer-baiting at worst.

“File this under Lesson Learned.”

The above were the words of a KDian in reaction to the news of Donald Duke’s latest comments clarifying what he said on the couch with Falz and Laila.

Yes. The presidential hopeful, in the wake of the stir his words during an interview with Falz and Laila caused, took to his instagram page to set the record straight.

That the law is the law.

That Homosexuality is a crime in Nigeria and should remain so.

And that as president, he would not be behind any move to repeal the antigay law.

Yes, Donald Duke has pulled a Nana Akufo-Addo on us – you know, that move where the Ghanaian president, Nana Akufo-Addo gave an interview that dangled hope for the Ghanaian LGBT and then did an about-turn when the homophobic fury of the country rose against him.

But if course. I was never among those hailing him as the next messiah. They’re cut from the same cloth, the lot of them.

The fact that he brought up the issue without being asked any question regarding it gave me hope. Made me dare to believe that we might actually eventually have someone who might look out for us when in office. I even ignored the rest of the bullshit rhetoric he accompanied his remarks with.

But oh well. Like you said, they’re all cut from the same cloth.

    Really, Kippy?!
Nigerians are having a field day trampling on us!

Anyway, I quite agree with PP. How many Nigerian politicians do you know who can broach the topic of homosexuality in a rather offhanded, nonjudgemental manner?

Hence, on my newly created LGBT bigotry scale (where 1 is “thoroughgoing bigot” and 10 is “LGBT friendly”), he comes in at 5!
It’s not that ideal but it’s not bad.
