‘It’s time for gay people to fight for women’s rights.’ – Patricia Arquette

After her Oscar win, Patricia Arquette urged gay people to fight for women’s rights as a means to return the favour for fighting for LGBT rights.

The Oscars was not just a night for the big winners to collect the coveted awards, many used their win to give impassioned speeches about political issues. Patricia Arquette was one of the stars who chose to speak about women’s rights.

Arquette, who won the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in Boyhood, called on gay people and people from ethnic minorities to join the fight for women’s rights. She claimed that women had fought for their rights and it was time that they helped fight for women.

During her acceptance speech, which was met with an excited reaction from Meryl Streep, Arquette called on support for her cause, claiming women had “fought for everybody else’s equal rights.”

Speaking backstage at the ceremony, she said: “The truth is, even though we sort of feel like we have equal rights in America, right under the surface, there are huge issues that are applied that really do affect women. And it’s time for all the women in America and all the men that love women, and all the gay people, and all the people of colour that we’ve all fought for to fight for us now.”

The actress has been criticised for her comments. Many who were following the show on Twitter claimed she ignored the unique struggles of women who are from ethnic minorities and LGBT.

One Twitter user said: “Nobody tell Patricia Arquette about all the queer women of colour that exist or her brain might explode.”

Recently, Patricia Arquette praised Bruce Jenner for being brave for their transition. Arquette’s sister is a trans woman and the actress said her sister taught her a lot about love.

Sorry, I don’t still get the bit about transexuality. If someone says “trans woman” do they mean the person was a man before but now a woman or vice versa?

    • kendigin
      February 26, 05:25 Reply

Trans loosely refers to people who are born one sex but identify both physically emotionally and psychologically as the opposite sex.

Transexual is completely different from transvestite which simply refers to a person who just likes wearing the outfit of the opposite sex.

Transexual may or may not undergo transition which is the physical process of altering the body of the person to become the sex he or she identifies with. i.e forming penis from clitoris or making a vagina for the guy

As for Lupita, it’s not so much the amount of screen time an actress or actor has in a movie but the impact that they make in the movie with the time they’ve got.

Lupita’s Oscar winning scene was the scene where she’s begging and trying to explain to her slave master that she only went to the next plantation to get soap to clean herself up. Her work in that scene alone was better than anything the other nominees in her category did in their entire movies. That’s why she won.

Viola Davis appeared in Doubt for 11 minutes and got an Oscar nomination out of it. Like I said it’s about the impact and quality of the performance

Period! Dennis, go watch that particular scene that Deola just talked about. It gives goosebumps, the electricity of Lupita’s performance there. She was very brief in the movie, but she used her time well. that, dude, is why she was nominated.

Dennis, not really. Being a feminist doesn’t have much to do with sexual orientation. Male privilege and misogyny are diseases ALL men are prone to – at least until they start to re-educate themselves.

Agreed but i think being gay makes people more sensitive especially when they have experienced being in the minority first hand. This is why there are more gay men that defend women’s rights than straight men. I dont have stats to proove this, I am ofcourse just saying what I have observed

@ DM, I have read the Color purple by Alice Walker. I was indeed impressed. I heard Oprah does a show about the book.

I haven’t seen Selma or read the book, or their eyes were watching god. if you have the e-books kindly state would love to read them. thanks and as for Lupita’s performance in 12 YAS, I cried in that part where she was wiped for going to the other plantation to get bathing soap.

Pete everything is not always about being the new cool. People do have their opinions and values and KD is for expression of these thoughts and ideas. I dont see what is “new cool” about someone saying they are a feminist, because that is whay they are!!!

      • Pete

I don’t see the feminist defense of most commenters on KD. So,pardon me for seeing it as the new cool. One thing I have noticed on KD is that we jumped into bandwagon. A post on love & everybody becomes romantics & believe in happily ever after, another post shows our slutty side & players

Pete, calm down. There are bandwagons and there are people who are genuinely what they are. Feminism is actually Dennis’ middle name. You’ll need to see him in action on Instagram to believe.

To the so called feminists amongst us, let’s not confuse being sexist for being feminist. Coming to a woman’s defense because someone says something derogatory abt her isn’t feminism, its borderline sexism if u ask me. The average feminist will tell you she can defend herself and further argue if u defending her is because she’s female and as such u see her as the weaker sex?

True feminism is abt equal rights. Treating males the very same way u treat females . If a male can carry 3 bags of rice at a go, then the average female should be delegeted to do same, this is how the typical feminists thinks . 21st century feminism is such a nebulous concept dt I can’t deal.

i personally think the idea of a male – feminist is preposterous and something ppl do to seem new -age or post modern.

Dennis is sure saying the truth. Gays understand better what women glo through. My female friend seems to find my canvass for female rights captivating and so unlike the average man; the reverse being something she has come to see as peculiar to men who are too busy enjoying their superiority over women to think things have yet become too unbearable for them. She however, always reminds me that I will one day, when I have a lover, I’m wont to treat her the same way; tentatively even worse…
