Kito Diaries And The Stories We Are Careful To Tell

Kito Diaries And The Stories We Are Careful To Tell

Good morning, KDians.

So, a couple of days ago, a post had to be taken down from this site because it was discovered that the person who presented the story (a fictional piece) as his own actually plagiarized it, passing off a flash fiction piece – titled “America, America” and originally penned by an Emmanuel Tochukwu Okafor – as his own.

This act of dishonesty has caused the kind of social media storm that is undeserved, especially for a forum such as ours, which is striving to authentically tell the stories of LGBT Nigerians. It has always been a thing of pride that every story published here was either originally written by the person who sent it in or was obtained appropriately from whatever quarters it already belonged to. To have that reputation sullied by a member of this virtual community, who was under no obligation to send in a story to begin with, is reprehensible.

I want to use this opportunity to beseech every member of this forum. Please, always ensure that whatever story you are sending in to be published is either yours to tell or carries with it the permission of the owner. Plagiarized works are unacceptable!

I understand the need some of us must feel to be part of those who generate narratives, who tell stories that others can read and relate to. If you are one of those and you cannot write, you don’t have to go steal someone else’s work to pass off as your own. If you have a story to tell and you cannot write, simply put it down anyway you can and send it in. part of my responsibility as an editor is to turn every story submitted into the best possible outcome that everyone can read and enjoy. It is hard work, it is tasking, but it is something I endeavour to do.

Please, no more plagiarized works!

Every man and woman has a story, every gay man and woman even more. Tell us your own stories. They’d be better appreciated and you’d be better fulfilled for it.

And as you do so, may we remain here, queer and fab.

Thank you.

Pink Panther.

I know the Emmanuel Tochukwu Okafor. We were both coursemates in school, in fact, we were in the same final year project group. He is the best graduating student with 4.96 GP. He behaves in an effeminate way but still insists he is not queer. People still have doubts though but who are we to question.

    He is a brilliant writer.

Ngwanu! Shey d person af disgrace himself now. Personally, I believe writing should be all about ur readers. Teaching them, sharing with them, making them laugh…(I like to read to learn and grow and flourish in my paranoia). If your motive for writing is to pass yourself off as some sorta intellectual, the readers still gain, but you av failed.

What the plagiarist did was just disgusting. He harmed the LGBT community by his action, the big fool.

Sigh. Apparently felt pressured into having a story up here.

It’s not a competition, people. You can be a very wonderful reader/commenter without having any story of your own penned down. There are a lot of us here who haven’t had any debut…

Plagiarism is really shabby. Very unacceptable.

Not just that story, a lot of stories that make their way here should also be investigated.
There is this LGTB group I follow on facebook. I swear I’ve seen more than half of the stories on Kitodiaries there. Of course I dismissed it, thinking it might actually be the real people now posting with their real accounts .
But with this plagiarism mess, I think it is worth investigating.
The need for online validation in a faceless anonymous forum though….
