Lil Nas X says he’s ‘too busy’ for a boyfriend
Lil Nas X said that he’s too busy for a relationship. The “Old Town Road” rapper made history by coming out as gay last year while atop the Billboard chart, but his success has come at a cost.
“I have met a lot of great people this year,” he told Variety. “[But] relationships are hard, because either I end up being too busy or fall for another person. I fall super easily.”
Speaking ahead of the Grammys, where he is nominated for six awards (the most of any male artist this year), Lil Nas X revisited his coming out tweet.
“It could have gone either way,” he admitted.
Before pressing send, the rapper decided not to consult his managers, publicists or his record label. The only person who knew what was coming was his father, who he came out to shortly before telling the world.
“We have become closer,” he said of their relationship. “I mean, especially now because I don’t have anything to hide. It was a shock for him. It’s still the beginning phase. I’m not comfortable bringing a guy around yet.”
Lil Nas X lived with his father from the age of nine, and has previously said that he probably wouldn’t have come out, were he still living at home.
The 20-year-old rarely speaks about his mother, who divorced from his father when he was five, but he revealed during the interview that she has faced her own demons.
“I never really talk about my mom. She’s an addict so we don’t have the closest relationship,” he explained. “Even trying to get her better — things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love.”
Lil Nas X will celebrate his blockbuster year at Sunday’s Grammy Awards with a special ‘Old Town Road All-Stars’ performance. He will take to the stage with BTS, Diplo, Billy Ray Cyrus, Mason Ramsey and other guests to recreate the many remixes of his number one track.
