Sam Smith Comes Out as Non-Binary, Genderqueer

In a new interview, singer crooner Sam Smith came out as genderqueer and non-binary.

On Instagram’s new series I Weigh Interviews, Smith opened about his body dysmorphia relating to his weight as well as his gender.

“I’ve always been very free in terms of thinking about sexuality,” he said. “I’ve tried to change that into my thoughts on gender.”

The Advocate reports that Smith embraces both the non-binary and genderqueer labels, and explains it to Jamil as, “You do not identify in a gender. You are a mixture of all these different things. You are your own special creation. That is how I take it. I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between—somewhat on the spectrum.”

Smith says that he feels male or female depending on the situation, and has felt “very feminine” during sex with men.

“I’ve sometimes sat there and questioned, do I want a sex change? It’s something I still think about, but I don’t think it is (something I want).”

The 26-year-old didn’t designate new pronouns in the interview, but he now hopes that talking about his identity can bring understanding for other people who are struggling with their gender.

“Self-love, I think people think it’s a destination,” he said. “It’s a practice.”

I can relate with Sam Smith. I feel the same way too most at times especially when I go to all these gay dating apps and see shits like “no fem or bitchy guys” “why don’t you be like a guy man?” “you’re a man why are you acting like a girl?” ” no shele mamas” etc I begin to wonder if I am really gay, because it seems all the gay people are strictly after masculinity and which straight man will take me seriously when I don’t even have boobs or a vagina. And oh to bisexuals, I think we’re complete sex toys because they only want to play around.

It’s like you’re feminine and almost everything about you is feminine too, but you don’t want to have boobs or a vagina. So it’s a bit complicated and we’re always inbetween, not very manly and not very womanly, that sort of thing.

I feel u too sis… unfortunately I have never been in that shoe nor ever felt that. I can empathize but the labels and roles and all what not, is just too much. I probably need more education on this dear.

I understand “not wanting labels”, but as a gay man, all of these “new labels” are really confusing. I can’t with this confusion mess!

Child, you have a penis, You are a man….. smh I miss the good old days where you were gay, straight, or bi and male or female…. all this gender bender make believe is too much for my tiny head!

Child was much more fun when he was just a talented gay man who made good music. Now, He’s just an Attention whore! I’m so not interested in this attention fuckery and gender identity politics he’s spurring on.

Well if he insist, he can as well return all the ‘best male’ awards and plaques he has ever won since he no longer identify as a ‘He’ or ‘Him’.

Sammy darling, Just give us good new music. That’s all we care and ask for!!

Frankly, I an not happy with your comment, not because u don’t relate with what you’re saying about there being a lot of “labels” which personally I like to call “safe words of identity”. As much as they may seem confusing and overwhelming to you (mostly because you can’t relate) doesn’t give you the right to call them out as something unworthy of respect and recognition.

Many people would probably love to be in your shoes and be so sure and certain of their gender because there was a name (label) for it before you were born plus a whole bunch of history and society’s pat on your back to keep you assured. Some of us feel exactly the way Sam feels and you know what? We don’t get that opportunity he has to express himself and actually open up about this painful truth of being in a world where even LGBTQIA+ people can’t try to understand or help each other by encouraging celebrities and personalities like Sam who continue to inspire and keep many queer and genderqueer people sane, assured, out of depression and suicidal tendencies with his music and truth.

And for your info, he earned those awards on a fair and respectable platform, to be non-binary means to revolve around gender and be alienated from it at the same time, you don’t have to understand it just respect someone else’s truth and leave him be after all he did not hurt or harm you with it so why take out your ignorant frustrations on such a great and beautiful person.

Please work on yourself and enjoy being enlightened, knowledge is power and information is why we’re alive in the first place. Do well to be more considerate with your words more often, many people come to this place for peace and quiet away from madness and isolation surrounded by fear and ignorant hatred.
