Sam Smith on his gender identity: “I feel just as much woman as I am man.”

Sam Smith revealed that he doesn’t fully identify as a cisgender man.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, the Too Good at Goodbyes singer revealed he’s somewhere on the gender spectrum.

When asked if he feels like a cisgender man, he replied: “No. I mean, I’ve got these tattoos on my fingers.” He pointed to small tattoos of the gender symbols and smiled. “I don’t know what the title would be but I feel just as much woman as I am man.”

Sam Smith also revealed his obsession with heels, makeup and dresses. “I love heels,” he said, talking about his love for a drag shop in Sydney called House of Priscilla, which he raids every time he visits the Australian city. “Oh my god, I just buy everything – heels, dresses. We have a great time.”

But Smith also revealed there was a time when he didn’t own any male clothes at all.

He said, “People don’t know this, but when I was 17, I remember becoming obsessed with Boy George and Marilyn. There was one moment in my life when I didn’t own a piece of male clothing, really. I would wear full makeup every day at school – eyelashes, leggings, with Dr Martens and huge fur coats, for two and a half years.”

As a result, the internationally renowned singer said it sometimes didn’t go down well in his hometown of Cambridgeshire.

“I got teased a lot for it,” he said. “But there were also people respecting me for walking around like that in school.”

Smith also talked about his current dating life, revealing that he’s still single despite photos of him with 13 Reasons Why star Brandon Flynn.

He hasn’t been in a long term relationship “where I believe someone has loved me back fully,” he said.

Speaking to Billboard, Sam said: “I wish I’d been in a long-term relationship by this age. But then, I didn’t move to London until I was 19.”

He furthermore added: “I’d grown up in an area where I was the only gay guy in school, the only gay guy in my village. I’d definitely be emotionally richer now if I’d had a long-term relationship, but if it wasn’t easy while I was growing up, it’s hardly going to be any easier for me now, is it?”
