Sex and the City 3 Cancelled
Unfortunately, three’s not a charm for the Sex and the City franchise as the next installment, Sex and the City 3, is apparently no longer happening. Despite years of reports that another outing from New York’s finest socialites was already being prepared, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her friends, sadly, will no longer be back for a third big screen outing.
After six successful TV seasons and two feature-length films, Carrie, Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) are ditching their Manolos for good. The Sex and the City franchise has become somewhat of a cult classic and still has a legion of followers around the world, so obviously, when Parker herself broke the news, there was a collective sob from those who have been hoping to see the fearless foursome one last time for a proper send-off.
Extra recently caught up with the fashion icon while attending the New York City Ballet Fall Gala with husband Matthew Broderick and asked about the status of Sex and the City 3. She delivered the disappointing confirmation that “it’s over,” and that they are “not doing it.”
She said, “We had this beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable script and story. It’s not just disappointing that we don’t get to tell the story and have that experience, but more so for that audience that has been so vocal in wanting another movie.”
Parker’s comments are heartbreaking to hear especially when it seems like there was some sort of a concrete plan for the threequel. Over the last several months she had also repeatedly teased the project, giving fans hope that it might finally come to fruition, only to be eventually shelved – which poses the intriguing question of what might possibly be the real cause of the film being scrapped. Numerous rumors point to Cattrall having over-the-top demands being the main culprit. Supposedly, she would not sign for the movie unless Warner Bros. also greenlit her other projects. At this point, Parker, Nixon, and Davis are all on board for it and the film studio just decided to drop the whole thing altogether. The actress, however, immediately shot down this particular claim because, as she explained, it was not about any demands, but simply because she did not want to do it.
Obviously, it wouldn’t be Sex and the City if it were missing any of the four friends. Even when Samantha moved to Los Angeles, she kept in touch and was still a main part of the girls’ everyday lives. So there is just not enough justification for her not to at least pop up in the film. While it is definitely a sad day for fans of the franchise, there is always a chance that everybody gets back to the negotiating table and try to come up with a compromise where everyone is happy if fans continue to clamor for the project.
