The Minority Report on Whether Leaving Nigeria Is A Solution

“If you want to be gay in peace, leave the country. Leave Nigeria!!!”

This sentiment is often expressed by homophobes and even gay people alike whenever the conversation of gay rights comes up in Nigeria.

But is that a solution?

One solution is to leave …it is a short term solution. Nigeria has dual citizenship so if your Nigerian citizenship is oppressive acquire another citizenship as you keep your Nigerian one until Nigeria ceases to be homophobic.

The other solution is to stay …it is a long term solution but very tough.

Stay doing what ? If you can access the corridors of power to have the Education system have comprehensive sex education like that which the UN rightly promotes in the world, there will be no need to leave Nigeria.

Also allowing gay rights on the basis of Health care not necessarily cultural acceptance is also a reason to stay if the Govt possesses sound understanding of sexual healthcare

However if no access is made to those corridors one could now opt for underground which is dangerous as you will be open to anything in the underground system.

In sum, Homophobia is best dealt with with Education . People fear what they don’t know . But people live in peace in an environment and with people they know.Knowledge is Education so Education is the key

If you can leave use your dual citizenship power and acquire another citizenship
If you can’t leave get a political party that values human rights and campaign for them to get in power to guarantee your rights to exist
