What The Landlord Has To Say To Us

Anti gay graffiti on a home in the Gishiri neighborhood of AbujaAnd the man was very succinct too. ‘Park And Live.’ As opposed to ‘Pack And Leave.’ You heard him, for all those brothers we have living in Gishiri, Abuja, the neighborhood where this was spotted. #ShakingMyHead. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that the place where a mob attacked some guys in the dead of the night?

Yes, this was in Gishiri, I personally know a guy who lived here and lost his home. Apparently, the area had become a popular residential area for gay guys owing to its cheap rents and proximity to the city centre, soon the other residents of the town started to notice , and one day, a young pastor mobilised some youth to go on an anti – gay rampage, they justified their acts by saying them wanted to complete GEJ’s good work (the anti-gay law), and so they went to the homes of all who were known or perceived to be gay, breaking into their homes, looting, vandalising and attacking them with dangerous weapons such as nail studded sticks … they also dragged off some gay guys to the police where the violence and beatings continued. My question is: what if ome of those guys had a visitor (eg a brother or cousin) who isnt gay buy was somehow caught up in the violence? Remember that in civilised parts of the world, this would be considered a hate crime and thoroughly investigated by the police …

This 1 no be laughing matter. I have visited that place b4 and in truth, the place is crawling with gay guys. Its kind of a slum tho. Ok maybe slum is a lil too harsh. But let’s just the place was a disaster waiting to happen.

Unfortunately my fears materialised couple months back when the anti-gay mob attacked. I feel so sorry for those guys living in that area. From what I heard, they went thru hell. And the worst part is there is no one to report to or ask for help.

Note to self: make money quick and get outta this stinking sinking ship called naija
