“Who Is Aubrey?” People think Ariana Grande came out as bisexual on her surprise new song
LGBTI social media users had their excitement about Ariana Grande coming out as bisexual fleeted, after Apple Music confused the lyrics to her new song.
Grande who had just announced a hiatus from social media after a tumultuous 12 months, dropped the surprise track, Thank U, Next.
The sweet pop song is dedicated to her past relationships and is the first time she’s acknowledged her split from fiancé, Pete Davidson. She also mentions her ex Mac Miller, who died this year.
‘Thought I’d end up with Sean
But he wasn’t a match
Wrote some songs about Ricky
Now I listen and laugh
Even almost got married
And for Pete I’m so thankful
Wish I could say thank you to Malcolm [Miller]
Cause he was an angel’
But there was a reference to a mystery person that everyone misinterpreted Grande as coming out as bisexual. Apple Music published a lyric about a supposed current relationship with someone called ‘Aubrey’, which social media users interpreted as being a woman.
The name quickly trended on Twitter, racking up 13,000 tweets in a matter of hours.
Grande had to break her social media hiatus to clarify she was singing about herself – Ari – not Aubrey. It signifies Grande is committed to focusing on herself and her mental health after a string of tragedies.
People expressed their disappointment and also embarrassment at thinking Grande had come out.
“Ariana fucking said “ari” not “aubrey” i thought our bitch was bisexual i was so happy that she finally saw the light… let me sit my dyke ass down,” one Twitter user wrote.
“I’m gonna forever pretend she says aubrey and is dating a woman,” another Twitter user wrote.
