You Ask Me: “Who Do You Think You Are?”

You Ask Me: “Who Do You Think You Are?”

The essence of life

Of the life we claim to hold dear

Lies in our conformity

In our ability to shrink ourselves

Become less of who we are

Morph into creatures vastly different from us

To cram ourselves into casts

Created by Society

Asserted by Religion

Upheld by Convention

Even if we are nothing like these moulds

Even if we lose who we are

After all, who we are isn’t all that important,

Right?

So you ask me,

“Who the fuck do you think you are

To try to be different

To live your truth

To not conform with what is normal

To try to normalize what isn’t

To rub your difference in my face?”

Who am I?

I am Me!

I am You

Or at least – the real You

The You who’s been reduced to a shadow

To a mindless night crawler

To a ghoul who slides into DMs covertly

Who dares at night to be who he isn’t at day.

You dare ask who I am?

I am the original

The masterpiece

The sun and not a ray

I am all you could be

All you remain ignorant of and afraid to be

I am the light.

Look in the mirror

See if you can’t see me in you

See if you can’t locate the rainbow

In spite of all the darkness

You have tried endlessly to cover it with.

Look in your mirror.

See for yourself.

You aren’t the norm.

You are what you hate

What you pretend to tolerate

What you force to hide

Is the reality you live inside.

Breathe in my light

Bask in my presence

Find yourself and all your glory

Be yourself – and only then

Will you start to live.
