“You miss out on so many good things in life when you are homophobic.” Wiz Khalifa accused of homophobia for saying straight men shouldn’t bite bananas in public
Wiz Khalifa has been called homophobic after he warned men not to eat full bananas in public. The 30-year-old US rapper made the comments during a radio interview this week.
Khalifa opened the segment by telling New York’s Power 105.1 FM presenter Charlamagne tha God, seemingly unprompted: “You gotta break it in half, ’cause if you bite a banana, you sus.”
The host responded: “God damn, Wiz! That’s how you wanna start the interview off?”
This didn’t put the singer-songwriter off though, as he continued: “Nah, if you a nigga, like, niggas gotta break the banana in half.”
Charlamagne responded: “What you mean, you just peel it and bite it!”
“Nah, see, that’s the thing,” Khalifa told him. “You gotta break it in pieces bro.”
“Why? It’s just a fruit.”
“I’m just trying to help you out, bro,” the singer replied. “If you’re in public, and you’re eating a banana, just break it into pieces.”
Charlamagne’s co-host Angela Yee quipped: “You gotta eat the bananas like, real sloppy.”
Khalifa replied firmly, telling her: “No. No,” before adding: “You can do that. You get more followers that way.”
People were quick to call out Khalifa online, with actor and video producer Quinta Brunson writing: “You miss out on so many good things in life when you are homophobic.”
A study last year found there is a strong link between men who feel that their masculinity is undermined, and men who take solace in sexist or homophobic humour.
Khalifa’s comments were also reminiscent of when Bolivian President Evo Morales said that eating chicken turns men gay because it’s “loaded with female hormones.” He added that he only eats non-genetically modified chicken to avoid becoming gay or effeminate.
