Russia considers banning ‘Beauty and the Beast’ movie over ‘gay moment’

The Russian government may ban the new Beauty and the Beast movie after the director, Bill Condon confirmed ‘gay moment’.

Since 2013, Russia adopted ‘gay propaganda’ laws, which effectively gag all LGBTI material.

The Beauty and the Beast live remake will have an ‘exclusively gay moment’ for the first time in a Disney film. LeFou, the manservant to Gaston – played by Frozen star Josh Gad – will show a struggle with his sexuality and his feelings for leading man Gaston. Director Condon promised that there will be a ‘big pay-off at the end’.

But Russian MPs say this is a ‘shameless propaganda of sin,’ according to the BBC.

Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky said: “As soon as we get a copy of the film with relevant paperwork for distribution, we will consider it according to the law.”

Once the Russian government sees the film, they will decide on the course of action.

Vitaly Milonov, an MP of the governing United Russia party, wants to ‘take measures to totally ban’ the movie.

Russian actor Pavel Derevyanko also told state-run TV Russia 24: “I will not take my kid to this movie.”

The movie is due to be released in Russia on 16 March.
