Tanzania is banning lubes in attempt to stop ‘encouraging’ people to be gay
Tanzanian officials are attempting to ban the import and sale of lube amid a crackdown on the LGBT+ community.
Reports suggest that the Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu said the ban was justified because the product “encourages homosexuality”.
Same-sex sexual activity between men can be punished with life imprisonment. Lesbian sex is currently not mentioned in penal codes.
According to the Lebanon Daily Star, the Minister said: “It is true that the government has banned the importation and use of the jelly to curb the spread of HIV. I have instructed stakeholders working with gay people to remove the products from the market.”
The minister added that stakeholders, who had been purchasing lubricants to give to the gay community, should give the money to the ministry instead to put towards maternity ward beds.
Police in Tanzania were in recent years accused of human rights violations against LGBT+ citizens, and of sexually assaulting people.
A man who was trying to organise a health seminar for gay and bisexual men was arrested, beaten and detained for two days. When he sought medical treatment, the hospital told him that he must first get a form from the police to show that he was a victim of assault – but the police refused.
The police have a duty to protect such vulnerable people, not expose them to hatred and bigotry, Human Rights Watch said.

‘The minister added that stakeholders, who had been purchasing lubricants to give to the gay community, should give the money to the ministry instead to put towards maternity ward beds.’
Seriously?! In the scale of humanity, gay people don’t matter that much?

July 23, 13:02I tell you, I find that paragraph you quoted above simply stunning. The statements African leaders make eh, it’s no wonder the rest of the world sees us as baboons sometimes.
So stakeholders -which would most likely be private individuals- should channel their money from whatever cause they find suitable into providing maternity ward beds? So what happened to the taxes they pay? Government is now advising, abi directing, private citizens on how to spend their money.

July 23, 08:59You know, it’s times like these I’m glad Nigerians have a remote minute sense, some of these african countries, you just wonder if their rulers really went to school, to think the only use for lube is to fuck, no worry, when I reach there and want to use ky jelly intubate a patient, or pass catheter into someone’s penis, or even perform a simple digital rectal exam, ill have my inward devilish smile while you scream in pain, cos there ain’t no lubrication to use.

July 23, 09:25Tanzanian officials do need a brain scrub…i can even fathom their level of illiteracy.
#Chestnut
July 23, 11:02theses Tanzanians are too intelligent o! they were right when they said “lubes encourage homosexuality”. everybody knows that if there’s no more lube in the market, gay men will automatically start being attracted to women. everybody knows this! Hehehe…

July 23, 12:31lol. i can easily see the nigerian government doing something like this. there is a competition among african countries to showcase how backwards they can be. we need to do something about these anti gay laws. they can still get worse.

July 24, 03:56smh. Sometimes, you can be really sad in this your relentless tracing of every homophobic intent back to religion. Whatever damage religion has done to you, you honestly need to heal from it.
Chuck
July 24, 08:34The damage done to our societies by values legitimised by religion is extensive. Patriarchy, sexism, homophobia, Paedophilia, gerontocracy etc.
I didn’t expect you to have a counter argument against my claim, but nonetheless I am disappointed to be confirmed in my low expectations of you.
What is the legitimiser/ source of this homophobia if not religion?
Pink Panther
July 24, 08:35Yes. Man can only lack common sense if he is religious. Very astounding point, really well made there, chuck.
