Harry Potter fans are not happy with JK Rowling for defending Johnny Depp

JK Rowling released a statement a few days ago regarding the casting of Johnny Depp in the movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

‘Harry Potter fans had legitimate questions and concerns about our choice to continue with Johnny Depp in the role,’ she acknowledges.

The issue fans had with Depps’ casting stems from his relationship with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, whom he was alleged to have physically abused.

Rowling also reveals that the team at Warner Bros. considered recasting Depp. However, based on the ‘agreements that have been put in place to protect the privacy of two people’ and an ‘understanding of the circumstances’, the team decided they were ‘comfortable’ and ‘genuinely happy’ to keep Depp on board.

‘Conscience isn’t governable by committee,’ she concludes. ‘Within the fictional world and outside it, we all have to do what we believe to be the right thing.’

Many Harry Potter fans have expressed their outrage over this statement. Some are particularly unhappy Depp is playing a queer character (Grindelwald had an unspecified relationship with Dumbledore, which may be explored in the movies), especially after the domestic abuse allegations against Heard, who is openly bisexual.

Twitter user cjandmiles wrote a short thread about it.

The queer baiting refers to Rowling revealing Dumbledore’s sexuality after the Harry Potter books were finished, rather than within the text itself.

Numerous others cite the themes of the Harry Potter series, including abuse and doing the right thing, in regards to their disappointment in Rowling.

Others brought up their own misgivings with the series, most of them cancelling JK Rowling.

This level of outrage could have a major impact on the remainder of the Fantastic Beasts films.

The sequel comes out on 16 November 2018 in the US.

I don’t want to believe that JK Rowling was driven by money and profit to be part of the decision to maintain Johnny Depp in the cast.

I want to believe that she condoned this because there’s more to the claims that Johnny Depp is an abuser. The woman strikes me as too “woke” to go along with Depp’s casting if he’d indeed abused Amber Heard.

Smh, i still find it how quickly people online are able to be judge, jury and executioner without knowing full details of what’s happened or hearing from both sides smh. It’s almost like people just want to be annoyed at everything lately.

I will still go watch the movies the first day it comes out.

Most of these ranters are no saint themselves. Some are quite despicable, the level of hypocrisy in the world today is nothing short of astonishing.

    I can’t fucking deal.
