Tweet of the Day: “Your Children Come In Their Own Form. If You Cannot Accept It, Don’t Parent!”
A few days ago, it was reported that a mother (and her boyfriend) of ten-year-old Anthony Avalos tortured and killed the boy after he admitted to them that he liked boys. Avalos was found unresponsive after his mother called 911, saying he had suffered a fall in their apartment in the 1100 block of East Avenue K on June 20. Avalos died the following morning. The mother, Heather Maxine Barron and her boyfriend, Kareem Ernesto Leiva, were arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder, torture and child abuse.
DCFS Deputy Director Brandon Nichols said that Anthony “said he liked boys” in the weeks leading to his death. Nichols did not provide any more details, but a DCFS statement said that they are investigating if “homophobia is a factor.”
If Barron and Leiva abused Anthony because he was gay, this would not be the first such case in Los Angeles. In 2013, 8-year-old Gabriel Fernandez was abused by his mother’s boyfriend, Isauro Aguirre, until he died because he thought the boy was gay. Aguirre was found guilty last year by a jury and sentenced to death.
This is an outrage, that parents can turn so completely into ugly nightmares in their children’s lives based simply on the fact that the children turned out to be different from their expectations, and this horror is sadly a reality here in Nigeria.
And Twitter user, @DoreenGLM had a few things to say about that.
