‘US Government has aided and abetted Boko Haram.’ – President Buhari

President Buhari says that the US is ‘aiding and abetting’ terror group Boko Haram by refusing to supply arms to Nigeria.

A US law called the Leahy Law prevents the US government from selling arms to countries which fail to tackle human rights abuses.

President Buhari made the accusation while addressing members of the US Institute of Peace on July 22nd:

“In our efforts at combating the activities of Boko Haram, the new Government has sought and obtained the support of not only our neighbours but other international friends and partners. Regrettably, the blanket application of the Leahy Law by the United States on the grounds of unproven allegations of human rights violations levelled against our forces has denied us access to appropriate strategic weapons to prosecute the war against the insurgents. Our forces have remained largely impotent because they do not possess the appropriate weapons and technology which they could have had, had the so-called human rights violations not been an obstacle. Unwittingly, and I dare say, unintentionally, the application of the Leahy Law amendment by the U.S. Government has aided and abetted the Boko Haram terrorist group in the prosecution of its extremist ideology and hate, the indiscriminate killings and maiming of civilians, in raping of women and girls, and in their other heinous crimes.”

Well, Mr. President, wouldn’t it just be easier to take care of those ‘unproven allegations of human rights violations’ so you can get us the help we need, instead of crying foul to the world media?

Gbam! My exact thought on the matter. Quit crying, fix the mess and get them weapons. This is Nigeria where anything and everything gets swept under the carpet. There ain’t no guarantee he will investigate anything is he’s given the benefit of the doubt.

This is the kind of news you hear about while you apply your make up, ensure your weave is properly fixed, put in finishing touches to your outfit, wear your heels, carry your bag, walk away and slam the door on the person telling you about it, without saying a word

Spoken like a true Nigerians. They can blame anything and everyone except them selves for the inadequacies. If America not agreeing with ur plea for aid, go else where and stop blabbing like a pressed cunt or simple do as demanded by fulfilling the necessary requirement. Less talking, more action.

I dont want to toe the line of the homophobes who say the US has withheld ammo from Nigeria because of its oppression of gays; but the stark truth is that gay rights are an inseparable part of human rights; of you trample upon the human rights of any section of your citizenry (including the gays), then you are a human rights violator! Nigerians must also learn to note that the US isn’t pushing for the recognition of full marriage rights rather it insists that basic human rights be guaranteed eg the right to be free from victimization, unlawful arrest (on grounds of sexual orientation), the right to police protection from assaults against your person /property etc, if as a government you participate actively in violating these basic rights of your citizens simply because they happen to be gay, then you are a human rights violator! I align myself with an totally support the US’ position! Nigerians have been wailing and speaking on tongues and ‘binding and casting ‘ BH for years, hopefully one day soon their opium will come through for them – why do they then need military assistance from anyone? Much less the ‘evil and demonic gay loving ‘ USA? ***sashays away and slams door****

Ok, while gay rights is an integral part of human rights, lets take our chill pills and think this thru properly. America gets an ovation from me for denying us the arms but The AVERAGE Nigerian is being abused and denied his rights even before u start compartmentalizing the rights thing into Women, Children, Gay rights. Lets be objective and not just be selfish because we are gay. Geez!

@ambivalentone I don’t think the US mentioned which human rights violation specifically blocks them from selling arms to us. Make una start say na gay rights before dem go begin eviscerate us again for LIB and co
