Prince Reportedly Overdosed On Percocet Days Before His Death

TMZ was the first to report the sudden loss of Prince, and now they’re saying that just days before his death, the musical giant OD’d on Percocet, a popular prescription painkiller.

An unnamed source tells them the star took so much of the drug that EMTs had to give him a “save shot” of Naloxone as soon as his plane made its unscheduled emergency landing last Friday at Quad City International Airport in Moline, Illinois, at about 1 a.m.

Naloxone, sold under the brand name Narcan, is a life-saving drug that is used as an antidote for opiate overdoses.

It’s been previously reported that Prince was hospitalized after the landing with flu symptoms, then released three hours later. He appeared at a gig the next night and assured fans he was fine, though he canceled two shows earlier in the month in Atlanta, citing the flu.

The sudden loss caught the world off guard, with early reports being shared with comments like “this has to be a hoax.” Unfortunately, if not unsurprisingly, there appears to be more to the story.

Prince was brought to the hospital and seen by a doctor again on April 20th in the Twin Cities area. Witnesses say he was at a Walgreens picking up a prescription later that night. Reports say he was taking the opioid painkiller Percocet for a hip problem.

It’s reported that he initially refused a double hip replacement surgery he needed on religious grounds — Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t believe in blood transfusions — though TMZ also reports that he underwent the surgery around 2010.

In 2009, The Guardian reported: “‘He’s in a lot of pain,’ a source told the Hollywood Report’s Showbiz 411 blog this week. ‘[Prince] is popping pain killers and hoping it will all go away.’”

Let’s not trash the guy. He must have had his struggles like we all do but most importantly Prince showed us that you could “self fashion” – you could live a life not strictly determined by how others defined you, but more often by how you defined yourself. Surely we as gay people should thank him for that.
