Lessons Learned From ‘She Called Me Woman’ (Entry 19)

LESSON 19

From the chapter, ‘Why Do I Have To Ask You To Consider Me Human’, DK admonishes:

“Why do I have to ask you to consider me human? Can’t you see I have the same body features as you? How am I less of a human because I’m a woman, because I don’t have sex with people who you have sex with? What does that have to do with you?”

This admonishment speaks for itself and my mind in every way possible. Oftentimes I do not get the gall of homophobia and misogyny. I do not understand the audacity of someone looking upon another fellow human, recognizing all the ways they are similar to each other, and then going ahead to declare that this person be alienated from the basic rights he himself enjoys as a human being.

How do such people live with themselves? How do you preclude a person from his right to a full existence simply because he has different expression of love from you or she has a different shape, form and genitals from you?

Where is the crime in being different?

Diversity is about all of us, and about us having to figure out how to walk through this world together. We have to learn to be kinder to one another and not judge simply because one person exists differently from us.
