Jide Macaulay Talks About The Beautiful Response His Mother Gave When He Came Out To Her

LGBT activist, Jide Macaulay is observing the significance of the LGBT History Month by sharing inspiring stories about his journey. And on February 4, the UK-based founder of House of Rainbow talked about his coming out experience with his mother. And for a coming out story, it is the most beautiful thing.

For three years, Macaulay had been out to himself, following his divorce from his wife.

“I was out only to myself after I told my ex wife,” he said to Kito Diaries. “I was still figuring out what to do. But in that time, I’d developed closer bonds with my gay friends, so socializing was getting better. This was in the UK where back in the 1990s, there were no spaces for black queer folks. So when you meet one, it’s like your long lost relative and soon, you start getting invites to drink-ups and house parties.”

He says his mother clued in to his sexuality “during gay pride weekend because I refused to run an errand for her, as I was heading to the parade.”

In the video that he shared on social media, he talked about how, three years after he was out as gay, “my mother had been watching me and trying to pay attention to what’s going on, and when she got fed up of trying to work out what was going on, she called me and asked me if I was gay.”

When Jide affirmed that he is indeed gay, his mother went on to give the most beautiful response any (Nigerian) parent could ever give their out child. He recounted, “Her response was shocking and also loving at the same time. She said, ‘Why didn’t you tell me?’ Because, for three years, she had been praying for God to give me another wife when she could have been praying for a husband.”
