Bryan Singer preemptively denies allegations against him, slamming upcoming Esquire story as “Rehash” Of “False Accusations”

Director Bryan Singer is getting out in front of an Esquire magazine piece that he believes will be negative and demonstrate what he says is “reckless disregard for the truth.”

Singer’s sexual misconduct has long been an alleged “open secret” in Hollywood, and now it appears that an on-the-record exposé is imminent. And so, Singer took to his Instagram to issue a statement ahead of the Esquire piece investigating the allegations. He writes, “I have known for some time that Esquire magazine may publish a negative article about me,” explaining that his friends, colleagues and “people I don’t even know” have been contacted.

Singer writes that the article will “attempt to rehash false accusations and bogus lawsuits,” and “guilt by association.”

The article “has been conveniently timed with the release of my film, Bohemian Rhapsody. I am immensely proud of this film and the company involved. I will comment further on this if necessary.”

Singer, currently promoting his Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, was accused last year by Cesar Sanchez-Guzman of a rape in 2003. Sanchez-Guzman, who was 17 in 2003, claims that the assault occurred on a yacht. In 2014, another man, Michael Egan, accused Singer and others of sexual misconduct but later withdrew the allegations.

Singer was fired from the 20th Century Fox/GK Films/New Regency’s Bohemian Rhapsody just a couple weeks before wrapping, with the studios calling out “unprofessional behavior” for his going AWOL during filming (Singer explained his absences on an ill family member). He was replaced only briefly on the film by Dexter Fletcher, and kept the directing credit.
