Why Everyone Needs To See Strut

Why Everyone Needs To See Strut

Everyone needs to see Strut.

It may look like just another reality television show, but it is so eye opening, I am in awe.

Many people do not understand what it means to be transgender, not even most gay and lesbian people. I remember during Caitlyn Jenner’s transition, a lot of gay people, right along with the heterosexual public, were vocal about how they didn’t understand what it means to be transgender.

That is why Strut is so important.

A lot of times, we bash what we do not understand. It is the human thing to do. This show shows us what it means to be transgender in the 21st century. Their lives may be more glamorous than the average Trans person but the stories resonate with all of us. The struggle to live your truth and be accepted for who you are and not what society wants you to be. It also explores how this struggle affects not just your personal life but also your career and how you relate with others. This show is the truth.

From Laith, the hot male model who is dealing with accepting himself because of his mother and her faith, to Dominique the older female model that has to work twice as hard to get the recognition that her cisgender counterparts already get. There is Ren who doesn’t want to conform to the stereotype of a trans female in fashion, and Arisce who although has a tough exterior still wants acceptance. And let us not forget Isis who we met on America’s Next Top Model, who has to deal with the pressures of being Trans and in the public eye.Strut 2

These stories are not new to us. Many of us (gay or straight) experience a lot of these issues in different areas of our lives. What is so amazing is that as we watch the show, we are not only entertained by their drama but we can understand or catch a glimpse of what it means to be transgender and how we can relate when we meet trans individuals in the future.

Whoopi Goldberg is the executive producer of the show.  Please check it out.

And as a bonus, here is a short video that illuminates the questions people shouldn’t ask trans people.

It’s not a DSTV show, is it? Like, it’s obtainable from the internet the way Finding Prince Charming is, yea? Becos if na DSTV, the monitoring spirit of homophobic Nigerians will just shut it down fast, using their children as an excuse. Since we have sworn that the television is what will train our children for us.
