Be Okay With Your Sexuality Defining You

Gay people are often pestered with this denigrating opinion, sometimes from heterosexual people and other times from fellow queer people, about “letting our sexuality define us.”

There is often this scorn targeted at those who only talk about LGBT issues or centralize their sexuality in their lives, with someone coming on Facebook several days ago to ask why “only being gay should be your identity. Heterosexual people don’t say they’re heterosexuals”. Of course, the comments section was filled with people who were able to school the user on the tone-deafness of that post.

However, this issue about letting your sexuality define you doesn’t go away, because even queer people use it as a way to target those who are being too gay. And a Twitter user recently took to the microblogging site to preach the sermon on why it should be okay for people to be allowed to let their sexuality define them.

This Twitter thread is everything. The whole reason we SEE only how homosexuality defines gay people and not how heterosexuality defines straight people is because homosexuality is under a microscope. Everything we do regarding our sexuality is amplified, whereas heterosexuality has so become normalized, the way they are defined has become natural.

But make no mistake about it: they’re as much defined by their sexuality as we are by ours.
