Wentworth Miller says he’s done with ‘Prison Break’ and playing straight roles

If Prison Break is coming back, Wentworth Miller has no interest in being in it.

The Prison Break star says he’s no longer interested in playing straight characters, dashing hopes that he could one day return to the popular series as his fan-favorite character, Michael Scofield.

“I’m out. Of PB. Officially,” the actor posted on Instagram. “Not [because] of static on social media (although that has centered the issue). I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told).”

He added, “No more Michael. If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons… I understand this is disappointing. I’m sorry.”

As for fans who might be “hot and bothered” that they “fell in love with a fictional straight man played by a real gay one,” Miller wrote, “That’s your work” along with a rainbow flag emoji.

"This is my favorite IG account," someone wrote in response to a recent post. Thank you. I want you to know I saw that. I see the positive comments and DMs (a lot of them anyway). Affectionate. Supportive. Appreciated (by me). Obviously there are comments and DMs I appreciate less. Who are these people? On my page? What backwards-ass, Stone Age values country did they crawl out of? The U.S.? I won't be disappearing (too many cool things to repost). The ability to comment likely will. I'm not concerned for myself. I can't be "bullied" in this space. I have too much power. "Delete. Block. Deactivate." Etc. But I take seriously the possibility of queer kids visiting here, recently out of the closet or exploring the idea… I don't want them exposed to bullshit. On a related note… I'm out. Of PB. Officially. Not bec of static on social media (although that has centered the issue). I just don't want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told). So. No more Michael. If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons… I understand this is disappointing. I'm sorry. Running originally from 2005 to 2009, Prison Break starred Miller as Michael, a man bent on breaking his brother Lincoln (Dominic Purcell) out of prison after he’s sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit. The two stars appeared in the revived fifth season in 2017, and Fox was in development for another installment before revealing in 2019 they had scrapped those plans.

EW has confirmed there are no current plans at Fox to develop additional seasons of Prison Break.

In his post, Miller also added that he wanted his social media platform to be an example for the “queer kids visiting here,” and spoke against his detractors.

“I’m not concerned for myself. I can’t be ‘bullied’ in this space. I have too much power. ‘Delete. Block. Deactivate,’” he wrote. “But I take seriously the possibility of queer kids visiting here, recently out of the closet or exploring the idea… I don’t want them exposed to bulls—t.”

Two of the actor’s Prison Break costars have expressed support for his decision. Responding to his onscreen brother’s post, Purcell said he was “glad you have made this decision for your health and your truth.”

Sarah Wayne Callies, who played Michael’s love interest Sara Tancredi, stood behind Miller and the show’s LGBTQ fans.

“With gratitude for all the work we did together, and with deep love, I’m voicing my support for that choice,” she wrote on her Instagram. “To all the fans, know this: the cast of prison break is a queer-friendly space. We stand with — and among — our friends & family in the LGBTQ+ community with full throated support for their rights and artistic work. all the time. always.”

Following Prison Break, Miller had a stint as Leonard “Leo” Snart aka Captain Cold in the CW’s The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. His character was in a relationship with Ray Terrill, played by Russell Tovey.
