Sound Sultan says Nigerian “crap music” is due to pressure from fans

Artiste Sound Sultan recently traced the poor quality of music currently renting Nigeria’s airwaves to undue pressure from fans not interested in professionalism.

The musician in Lagos said that the quality of works by contemporary artistes ought to attract the right level of patronage from the listeners, but noted that the current trend of music have regrettably become a bad influence on most musicians.

“I feel music is a great tool that we should not misuse. If music is misused, it can tell a lot on the generation,” he said. “I want to be able to play my music where my kids are, not tell them to cover their ears. You see those crap music and all those other things, I don’t know if it’s me that’s buying them or if it’s me that’s telling them to play it. There must be somebody telling people that they want to hear that thing.

“When there is clamour, where there is demand for something, then they will keep putting it upfront to their audience. They want to satisfy their audience, they don’t want to bore anybody with their airplay. So if there’s stuff like that going on, trust me, it’s a controlled market, somebody is doing something somewhere.

“So for me, I don’t really concentrate on pointing fingers, I just try to deafen your ears with my own sense of making music.’’

According to him, most musicians usually produce new works without working hard on them to be masterpieces.

Sound Sultan is noted for such hits like Jagbajantis, Ghen Ghen, and Bushmeat, through which some of the societal ills were lampooned.

Trying to justify his and the entire Nigerian music industry’s incompetence?? Abeg go Sidon.
See how everyone is bowing to Patron Saint Adele, someone who (in the eyes of the world) shouldn’t have been able to sell music because she ain’t flashing boobs and doesn’t look like a size 2 pencil.

My point: You don’t have to roll with the crowd and do what others are doing. Show proof of your talent and people will notice. Don’t come and rant about pressure from fans. Mtchew.

I don’t get when people thumb down Nigerian music; I really don’t get it. I am not an aficionado but clearly Nigerians like their music in a certain way and the musicians deliver what the market likes.

This is purely a demand and supply thing. Also nobody gets to dictate to another person what “good music” should be! If I like the sound of children playing with empty tins of milk, that is my music! You cannot come and tell me how yours is better.

Tecno is quite popular as a genre of music across Europe, biko does Tecno even have lyrics? Is it not mostly just about the beat?

Nigerians like their music in a certain way and people who like it that are are not less intelligent or exposed like you! They just like something different from you.

The musicians respond to the demand, and supply what the market wants and everybody is happy!

      Kester dear, you misunderstood DM

Techno is a genre of music, characterize by high paced beats and most times no lyrics. David Guetta comes to mind… This genre is common in most parts of Europe

He wasn’t referring to the Nigerian artists

I don’t think Nigerians are intelligent or exposed enough to appreciate well structured and quality music . All we want to do is dance , and so we settle for beat over substance

The more exposed or oriented a person is, the less likely they are to approve of Nigerian music

Where is the evidence for “the more exposed or oriented a person is, the less likely they are to approve of Nigerian music”?

All these plastic gays that feel they have to make up for having an unaccepted/derided sexuality by clinging to ” superiority” in esoteric music or art or TV.

There are other, less pyschoogically problematic ways to process society’s rejection of your proclivities.
