Deola’s Corner: Hot New TV Shows You Should Anticipate

Deola’s Corner: Hot New TV Shows You Should Anticipate

With every new Fall season comes a roster of new TV shows from various networks hoping to make a mark and stick around. But the world of TV is harsh, and not all make it; some are cancelled a few episodes in, others at the end of the season (*weeps for Forever*), and others are cancelled before they even air.

This doesn’t stop the networks from churning out new stuff come every fall season. And here are five of the new TV shows I am most excited about.

  1. SCREAM QUEENS: Despite this being a Ryan Murphy production (Glee, American Horror Story), I am still legitimately excited about this. The cast of Emma Roberts, Lea Michel, Keke Palmer, Skyler Samuels and Abigail Breslin, to mention just a few, has me curious about this. Scream Queens is an anthology, horror-comedy series, and as long as it’s campy, fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously, then it should do pretty well.

PS: Ariana Grande and Nick Jonas will guest-star on certain episodes, while hottie Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Austin and Aaron Rhodes (remember those two hot gay twins who came out to their dad on the now viral coming out video, yeah those two) will recur.

Season premiere is on September 22 on Fox.

  1. THE CATCH: This is a curious one that’s here for all the wrong reasons. The Catch is an upcoming Shondaland Production, created by Jennifer Schuur (known for being a producer on Hannibal). The series is something of a legal-crime thriller and focuses on the life of Alice Vaughan, a fraud investigator who becomes a victim of fraud by her fiancé. That sounds like a compelling enough premise, but there’s been a lot of behind-the-scenes drama with a lot of re-casting and reshooting. Series creator Schuur has even exited the show due to “creative differences”. This is a curious one for me, because it seems like we might just have the first Shondaland dud since Off the Map (cancelled after one season in 2011). The Catch is slated to take over HTGAWM’s slot on the #TGIT roll once Murder airs its 15-episode second season completely.

Season premiere is To Be Announced on ABC.

  1. SUPER GIRL: Super Girl comes from the house of Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash, The Mysteries Of Laura, Legends of Tomorrow, Blindspot). As if Greg Berlanti wasn’t already a busy dude, he’s added a new TV show to his growing roster. As a nerd, I can’t complain, but I have to admit, I fear Berlanti is going to drain himself creatively (the same fear I have for Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy). The pilot episode of Super Girl leaked a couple of months back, just like that of The Flash leaked before it premiered. But unlike The Flash, which got rave reviews following its leak, which amped up expectations for the show, Super Girl‘s leak has done the exact opposite, with its reviews being from mixed to outright bad. A lot of complaints were about the CGI, which could be argued was still being worked on prior to the leak. The leak could be a blessing in disguise, as it’ll help them to figure out what needs fixing. Super Girl stars Mellisa Benoist (Glee), Calista Flockhart (Brothers and Sisters), Chyler Leigh (Grey’s Anatomy), Mehcad Brooks, David Harewood, and the awesome Jeremy Jordan.

Season premiere is on October 26 on CBS.

  1. MARVEL’S JESSICA JONES: This is an upcoming Netflix TV show based on Marvel comic characters of the same name. Marvel TV has done quite a good job in carving out this little TV universe for these characters, which still fits into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following the amazing work that was Marvel’s Daredevil (released on Netflix earlier this year), I am really excited to see this. I confess to not knowing much about the Jessica Jones character, which is what amps my excitement even more to learn about her. It stars Kristen Ritter in the titular role, David Tennant as the villain Kilgrave, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Rachael Taylor and Carrie Ann Moss.

Rosario Dawson’s well-received Nurse Claire Temple character, previously seen in the Daredevil series, is also expected to guest-star at some point.

PS: Mike Colter’s Luke Cage will still get his own show following the release of this one, already titled Marvel’s Luke Cage.

The full first season will be released on November 20th on Netflix.

  1. THE SHANNARA CHRONICLES: This is one that left me absolutely gobsmacked. Prior to running into the trailer while surfing the web, I hadn’t heard anything about The Shannara Chronicles, but after seeing the trailer, it immediately shot right to the top of the newest TV shows I can’t wait to see. Based on the Shannara book series by Terry Brooks, Shannara is a fantasy, science fiction series, produced by MTV. Yeah, I know – MTV! The same network that gave us the dreadful Teen Wolf for 5-going-on-6 seasons. That was the most shocking part.

Now I haven’t read any of the Shannara books before (I did see a comment that described them as Lord Of The Rings meets The Maze Runner), but the trailer featured some of the best CGI I have ever seen on a TV show before. It looked like something straight out of The Hobbit franchise. The trailer also showed just enough to wet my appetite and left me begging for more. Now I have learnt the hard way not to judge anything based on the trailers, because them things can be misleading, but if the TV show turns out to be anything as good as the trailer, then we are in for a treat.

Shannara stars Austin Butler (Carrie Diaries, Arrow), Manu Bennet (Spartacus, Arrow), and John Rys Davies, who just makes me geek out. The show is produced by Alfred Gough, Miles Millar (both known for Smallville), and Jon Favreau (director on Iron Man and Iron Man 2, and producer on The Avengers and Iron man 3). Guys, I nearly fell off my chair when I found out that Favreau is attached to this show! Here’s to hoping Shannara doesn’t fall my hand.

Season premiere is on January 2016 on MTV.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Quantico (Sept 27, ABC), Blindspot (Sept 21, NBC), Crazy EX Girlfriend (Oct 19, CW), Grandfathered (Sept 29, FOX);

Minority Report: Based on the movie of the same name, it’s meant to be a sort of sequel to the 2002 Tom Cruise movie. It stars Megan Good and is produced by Steven Spielberg. (Sept 21, Fox)

Limitless: Based on the Bradley Cooper movie of the same name. Bradley also serves as a producer and stars on the show as his original character from the movie.  (Sept 22, CBS)

Heroes Reborn: Fun fact about this show – I hear Ryan Guzman of Step Up and The Boy Next Door fame plays a gay character on the show. (Sept 24 NBC).

Series everywhere! Super confused on which to watch and which not to! But “Scream Queens” sounds like something to look forward to. Racheal Berry is already a “screamer” nd Keke has sure grown into a fine young woman.

But how does Deola even cope self? Watching d old existing ones nd still keeping up with the new ones!

Scream Queens is my number one. that and the Jessica Jones. There has been released a Daredevil series? And Rosario Dawson was in it? I love that woman, was totally feeling her character is Sin City. I’d love to see the Daredevil. Hopefully it fared better with the audience than that sappy nonsense Ben Affleck did.

Oh it really did. It was dark, gritty and well written.
Its was supposed to be a limited series, but it was so well received that the network renewed for a new season.

Plus the stunt work and fight scenes are some of the best I have seen on TV. Its a cool show.

The thing with series is that I’m actually really impatient to settle down and watch an episode without fastwording to where the climax is happening, or replying a msg on my phone, and this is with just one episode!

I’m more a music person. Maybe someone should do a weekly music review with no Nigerian songs

Scream Queens is one show I am positively looking forward to. Although it is another typecasting mean girl role for Ms Roberts. I generally just hope if the show becomes a success Ryan would not ruin it by giving his celebrity friends cameos.

Exactly. What’s with gay producers and their huge hunger for excessive use of celebs in their production. The same problem I have with Empire

Oh my gosh MECHAD!!!!!!! The vicious manner he fucks in true blood makes me envy that silly black girl. And his cakes………. Also I bet my left nut he is packing a mean dick (his hands are so large) wouldn’t miss watching him in anything… it’s just that supergirl won’t allow him fuck her cos I don’t remember her engaging in any bi racial orgy tho if they were silly enough to create a black Johnny in fantastic four what aren’t they capable of? .. Speaking of series I have not heard a mention of ‘Hit the floor’ abi no one likes it? I did.

When you guys watch the full season 1 you can come back and do a full review. I can’t follow a new series when people haven’t watched it. The weekly series I read here is more than enough. I just can’t cope.

So I just finished Scream Queens and like most new series, it looks promising. I’m not too excited about it….for now.

It comes off as campy and very lampoonish which I kinda like. Lol. Looking forward to more hilarious one-liners.
