#FineQueerCouples: LGBT couples in Africa celebrate love online with trending hashtag

It may still a taboo topic in most African nations, but same sex love is gaining grounds despite the risk to life and intolerance of LGBT rights. South Africa is the only country on the continent where same-sex marriage is allowed. Besides Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Lesotho, Mozambique and Rwanda where it is legal without guaranteed protections, same sex relationships are criminalized in the rest of Africa.

Despite the risks, some African queer couples joined the trend on twitter of the hashtag #FineQueerCouples. Most of the couples were from South Africa and were posting pictures of themselves with intimate captions expressing their love for their partners.

In the midst of all the love was of course those who couldn’t keep from expressing their displeasure and exhibiting their homophobia.

However, it is evident that sexual attraction or relationship between members of the same sex or gender is evolving from being a hidden practice to a symbol of pride in Africa.

We will get here someday soon, Nigeria. When we too will celebrate our love in the comfort of this land instead of in diaspora. 🙂

  2. Awww… This is so uplifting and heartwarming. Love sweet love.

And to the obsessed and obstinately homophobic with their hemophiliac Jesus, shouldn’t you be following TBN or watching Emmanuel TV?
