A Timeline of Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker’s feud as the ‘Sex And The City’ star lashes out at co-star following brother’s death
Kim Cattrall has hit out at Sarah Jessica Parker after her former co-star reached out after the death of Kim’s brother. Kim’s brother Chris passed away after going missing in Canada, with fans and friends offering their condolences. Sarah Jessica Parker was among these people, commenting on Kim’s Instagram: ‘Dearest Kim, my love and condolences to you and yours and Godspeed to your beloved brother. Xx’
We thought this olive branch meant that the Sex And The City co-stars had made up following their feud over a possible sequel.
However, it seems the war is far from over, as Kim has branded Sarah a ‘hypocrite’ in a very scathing Instagram post.
The actresses, popular for their roles as Samantha and Carrie in the hit TV show, have been at each other’s throats for years – although hints of tension in the past have often been denied. And now it seems the war is far from over, as Kim has branded Sarah a ‘hypocrite’ and accused SJP of ‘exploiting her tragedy.’
We take a closer look at where it all began.
February 2004: Financial arguments
While there were always rumors of cat fights quietly plaguing the set of Sex and the City throughout its six-season run, things came to light in 2004 as the show was ending, after Cattrall told Jonathan Ross that she had demanded more money. The shooting for the spin-off movie was reportedly delayed due to salary negotiations — namely Kim’s. Apparently, Kim wanted her pay cheque to increase after SJP landed an executive producer credit in the second season. “I felt after six years it was time for all of us to participate in the financial windfall of Sex and the City,” she said in an interview, revealing that she wanted to be paid $1 million (£720,000) per episode instead of the $350,000 (£250,00) she was making. “When they didn’t seem keen on that, I thought it was time to move on.”
September 2004: “We have our own separate lives.”
In the same year, as rumours about tension began to surface, Kim sat noticeably far away from her co-stars at the Emmys. At the after-party, SJP, Cynthia Nixon and Kristen Davis were all seen hanging out together, while Kim hung around on her own. When she was later asked why they were separated, Kim said, “Are we the best of friends? No. We’re professional actresses. We have our own separate lives.”
Oh, burn.
May 2008: Kim defends SJP publicly
Fast forward four years on and fans were beside themselves as the SATC movie finally hit the big screen, after salary negotiations talk were finalised. In Marie Claire’s cover story ahead of the film’s premiere date, former HBO CEO Chris Albrecht weighed in on the salary disputes. “When you’re keeping people for years, you have to continue to pay them more money,” he said. “Sarah was becoming more and more famous, and her salary increased beyond what was contractually committed, which is normal for hit shows. The other actresses wanted to keep up.”
And SJP addressed the money talk by defending Kim when The Telegraph visited the set of the movie. “She mentioned money and no one should vilify her for it,” she said. “People made a decision that we had vilified her. No one bothered to say [to the rest of us], ‘Are you disappointed by not making the movie?’ Yes. ‘Do you respect and support her choice to not do it?’ Absolutely.”
December 2009: ‘I don’t think anybody wants to believe I love Kim.’
Things looked a little rosier as Kim and Cynthia attended the NYC premiere of SJP’s new movie, Did You Hear About the Morgans? In the same month, SJP was on the cover of Elle, and once again talked about Kim and the alleged salary disputes that delayed the first movie. “I don’t think anybody wants to believe that I love Kim,” she said. “I adore her. I wouldn’t have done the movie without her. Didn’t and wouldn’t.”
January 2010: Kim becomes more and more tired of the feuding rumours
Speaking to The Daily Mail, Kim admits to being extremely fed up with the feuding rumours that have haunted the pair for years. “People don’t want to believe that we get on. They have too much invested in the idea of two strong, successful women fighting with each other. It makes for juicy gossip and cop,” she said. “The truth of us being friends and getting along and happily doing our jobs together is nowhere near as newsworthy. I think Sarah is fantastic. She is a born leader and she guides the crew and the cast in such a strong but gentle way. She and I are sick of this. It’s exhausting talking about it, and a real bore. Next?”
May 2010: SJP finally admits ‘feelings get hurt’
But the tone changed between the two as they were forced to address feud speculation yet again ahead of the second SATC film’s premiere. SJP admitted that sometimes “feelings get hurt” due to how much time they spend together on set. “You’re on set, you’re working 90-hour weeks, you’re never home, you’re exhausted,” she said. “There are times when all of us have been sensitive and sometimes feelings get hurt. But I don’t have any regrets about how I’ve treated people.”
Cynthia Nixon also weighed in, adding, “It hasn’t always been smooth sailing. But the idea that we’re somehow adversarial is ludicrous.”
August 2016: Fans begin speculating again
SJP takes on her nice-girl persona as she posts a messaged to Kim on her 60th birthday signing it with In a very public display of affection, she signed off the picture with: ‘Sending love and the very best for a perfectly marvelous, joyous, healthy and adventure filled birthday year. Your ol’ pal, fellow mischief maker and ‘sister’, Sj xxx.’
The next month, SJP talked to Time about the response the birthday post received from people who continued to speculate about their relationship. Of course, SJP questioned whether it was a sexist thing. “I posted something on Kim’s birthday and people were like, ‘Oh my God, I didn’t know you liked her!’” she said. She added: “What? We were all at liberty to walk away at any time! But nobody asked those questions of shows with men. Isn’t that interesting?”
October 2016: SJP blames society for pitting women against each other
Sarah was asked about the feud rumours on Howard Stern’s radio show, and brought up society’s habit of pitting women against one another. “It used to really confound me and really upset me because we were part of a family of sopranos and no one ever questioned the relationships of the men on that show and no one ever said to them, ‘Did you hang out this weekend with each other? Did you give each other Christmas presents?’” she said. “These were my sisters, these were people that I grew to love and admire,” she added.
Although she admitted that not every day has been perfect. “Was every day perfect? Were people always desperately, hopefully in love with each other? No, but this is a family of people who needed each other, relied upon each other and loved each other. This sort of narrative, this ongoing catfight, it really upset me for a very long time.”
September 2017: Sex and the City 3 panned due to ‘feud.’
SJP confirmed that a third Sex and the City movie was this close to happening before reportedly due to Kim refusing to do the film. This was something Kim was quick to deny on Twitter, shooting down rumors of her alleged demands. ‘The only ‘DEMAND’ I ever made was that I didn’t want to do a 3rd film….& that was back in 2016.’
Speaking of panned film, SJP told Extra: “It’s over…we’re not doing it. I’m disappointed. We had this beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable script and story. It’s not just disappointing that we don’t get to tell the story and have that experience, but more so for that audience that has been so vocal in wanting another movie.”
October 2017: Kim says SJP could’ve “been nicer”
However, Kim wasn’t done with making things clear. Speaking to Piers Morgan during an appearance on his ITV show, Life Stories, Kim said that Sarah “could have been nicer” about the demise of SATC 3.
“And now, now at this very moment it’s quite extraordinary to get any kind of negative press about something that I’ve been saying for almost a year of ‘no’ that I’m demanding or a diva,” Cattrall said, according to The Daily Mail. Kim added that she couldn’t figure out what SJP’s “issue” is. “And this is really where I take to task the people from Sex and the City and specifically Sarah Jessica Parker in that I think she could have been nicer. I really think she could have been nicer. I don’t know what her issue is, I never have,” she said.
January 2018: Kim says they “were never friends” leaving SJP “heartbroken.”
While being interviewed by Piers Morgan, Kim said: “We’ve never been friends. We’ve been colleagues and in some ways it’s a very healthy place to be because then you have a clear line between your professional life and relationship and your personal.”
SJP was asked about that comment during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live. And her response will either shatter your very being, or is some bloody good acting. Host Andy Cohen asked: “What was your reaction to Kim Cattrall telling Piers Morgan that you were never friends just colleagues?”
“Just…heartbroken,” she replied. “I mean, that whole week, you and I spoke about it … I found it really upsetting because that’s, you know, that’s not the way I recall our experience.”
February 2018: Kim tells SJP to stop “exploiting her tragedy” after brother’s death
Kim’s brother Chris passed away after going missing in Canada, with fans and friends offering their condolences. SJP was among these people, commenting on Kim’s Instagram: ‘Dearest Kim, my love and condolences to you and yours and Godspeed to your beloved brother. Xx’
Kim responded with: ‘I don’t need your love and support at this tragic time @sarahjessicaparker.’ In the caption, Kim wrote: ‘My Mom asked me today “When will that @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?” Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. ‘Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your “nice girl” persona.’
She also shared a link to a New York Post article entitled ‘Inside the mean-girls culture that destroyed Sex And The City’.
Sarah has yet to respond.
